Neck pain that arises from an injury (such as an automobile accident) or as a result of posture can be incredibly disruptive towards our daily activities. Individuals who suffer from neck pain will often times undergo physical therapy or take medication, however, sometimes the pain is so severe that doctors recommend steroid injections to help numb the pain. At TCM Health Center we see many patients with varying severities of neck pain and use acupuncture to help treat the condition.
Acupuncture works towards balancing the qi (an essential force) and flow of energy in the body. It is believed that if a natural flow in the body has been blocked it can create pain or other complications. The reason why acupuncture is often so successful with pain conditions is due to its stimulation of the central nervous system to help release neurotransmitters such as endorphins, which act as natural painkillers. Patients who come in for neck pain often find that after a certain course of treatment they have significant improvement with the pain and inflammation.
In a 2006 study conducted by Witt et al., researchers examined the effectiveness of acupuncture in patients with neck pain. 14,161 patients with chronic neck pain were divided into two groups: the first group received acupuncture treatment while the second group received no treatment. At the end of the study researchers concluded that there was a significantly greater success in the improvement of neck pain and disability in the first group who had received acupuncture illustrating acupuncture as an effective form of treatment.
While the root of the condition truly varies, at TCM Health Center we hope to help individuals to the best of our ability to allow them to regain movement, comfort, and healing through acupuncture treatment.
